I'm sitting at Eurostar Saint Pancras as I'm posting this, waiting for the train that will take me from Eccles Cake to Eclair.
Can't remember who said this but I seem to recall some French person saying you couldn't trust the cuisine of a nation that named its most popular afternoon-tea accompaniment a 'digestive' biscuit...
See you on Monday at the Shakespeare and Company party?

Heaven help us if you turned your drawing into a triptych, with American pastries as the third panel! Cupcakes, doughnuts, trifle, biscuits, cookies; lots of things seem to lose something in translation....

I read about some French chef in the UK who said that the next big thing in France - after the great crumble invasion - would be 'sticky toffee pudding'. I can't say that I've seen it so far!

I haven't seen sticky toffees yet - though plenty of crumbles - which, I think, originated with Rose Bakery...

Rose Bakery does sell sticky toffee pudding. I agree, it's only a matter of time before it becomes the next craze in France... now if only the same thing would happen this side of the pond.
A few years ago I bought a French crumble cookbook in large part because I was just so amused by the idea. A few of the recipes are just bizarre (e.g. lemon crumble, which is basically lemon curd with a crumble topping. Umm, really??) but all the ones I've tried have been wonderful - griottine and hazelnut, spiced plum, pear with speculoos - so proof that not only do some things not get lost in translation, they sometimes gain!

The party at Shakespeare and Company look like it would be fun. The apartment I rent in Paris is about 2 block from there and in my early years in Paris, before I could read French, I spent a lot of time and money there. Even now I feel a bit nostalgic when I walk by it.
