Fivedials magazine asked me to do a kind of 'illustration-essay' (like a photo-essay, but with drawings). I decided to document something I see all-too-often around Paris, and which lookss subtly different from the same problem in the UK. I remember seeing some muslim girls begging when I was last in Paris. Coming from London, it was an unusual sight - you never see that here. And they looked so mournful and pious. I was pregnant and I couldn't stop myself from crying at the sight of them. Very weird.

Yes, the terrible and moving thing is that all that perfomance of destitution masks a destitution which is equally real, and hardly needs hilighting in this way.
